The Next Step: Building a Bridge Beyond the B.R.I.D.G.E.® Program

After five years of implementing the B.R.I.D.G.E.® program in Cincinnati and Dayton, we began to notice something important. Our 14-week curriculum was creating meaningful change. Girls were doing the hard work. They were gaining confidence, thinking differently about their futures, and building momentum toward becoming the women they wanted to be.

But then came the question: What’s next?

It felt, at times, as though our graduates were stepping off the progress train at the end of those 14 weeks. The journey had begun, and significant progress had been made, but could there be more? Should there be more?

What if completing B.R.I.D.G.E. wasn't the end of the journey, but the beginning of the next chapter? What could we put in place to continue supporting these young women as they pursued their goals, expanded their vision, and continued changing the trajectory of their lives?

The answer became the Fearless Awards.

From Recognition to Relationship

The inaugural Fearless Awards created something we knew our graduates needed: a bridge to what comes next. But there was one important component that could make that bridge even stronger—mentoring.

We began asking - What if these teenage girls could connect with adult professional women who had lived through experiences they could relate to? What if they could sit across from someone who understood that success isn't always a straight line? Someone who had faced disappointment, uncertainty, self-doubt, difficult decisions, and unexpected obstacles—and still found a way forward. Someone who could say, “I understand. I've been there. And I want you to know that you can get through this, too.”

That kind of connection is powerful.

A mentor can inspire a young woman to dream bigger, live more boldly, and pursue goals she may have once believed were unattainable.

The Power of a Shared Experience

At From Fatherless to Fearless, we've learned that sharing your personal story isn't easy.

Not everyone is comfortable opening up about their experiences, and not everyone wants to share the most personal parts of their lives. We understand that. Our stories belong to us, and there is value in privacy.

But we've also learned something equally important: Shared experiences can be incredibly powerful.

We don't always connect with people because their lives look perfect. In fact, it's often the opposite.

We connect through the moments that remind us that other people have struggled, questioned themselves, fallen short, started over, and found their way forward.

Authenticity creates connection.

The polished version of success can sometimes feel distant and unattainable. But hearing from a woman who says, “I didn't always know what I was doing either,” can make an incredible difference to a young woman trying to figure out her own path.

It's like standing at the edge of cold water. You may dip your toe in and immediately pull it back. But when someone you trust is already in the water, reaches out their hand, and says, “Come on in. You can do this,” the water doesn't seem quite so cold.

Sometimes we simply need to see someone else go first.

A Bridge to Possibility

That is what the Fearless Awards and its mentoring component represent. A bridge. A bridge between where our graduates are today and where they have the potential to go.

It's an opportunity for a young woman to build a genuine relationship with a mentor who has walked a similar path, faced challenges, overcome obstacles, and discovered possibilities on the other side.

It's a chance to talk honestly about where she has been—and, more importantly, where she wants to go.

And instead of simply reading about success in a self-help book, she can sit across the table from a woman who has lived it.

She can ask questions.

She can share concerns.

She can listen to wisdom gained through experience.

She can laugh.

She can be encouraged.

She can be reminded that she doesn't have to have everything figured out right now.

Sometimes the Light Is Another Person

Mentorship isn't about giving a young woman all the answers.

It's about helping her discover her own.

A mentor can be a beacon of light when the path ahead feels uncertain. She can help a young woman navigate high school, explore college and career possibilities, make difficult decisions, set goals, and recognize opportunities she may not have considered.

Sometimes mentorship is a life-changing conversation.

Sometimes it's practical advice.

Sometimes it's an introduction to a new possibility.

And sometimes it's simply hearing someone say:

“Keep going. You're on the right path.”

Those words can carry more weight than we realize.

The Journey Continues

The B.R.I.D.G.E. program was never meant to be a destination.

It was designed to help young women begin moving forward—to see themselves differently, recognize their worth, make healthier choices, establish boundaries, embrace hope, and envision a future beyond their current circumstances.

The Fearless Awards builds on that foundation.

It says to our graduates:

Your journey doesn't end here.

There is more to discover.

More to learn.

More to become.

More dreams to pursue.

And you don't have to walk the next part of the journey alone.

At From Fatherless to Fearless, we took the next step because we believe our young women deserve more than a 14-week experience. They deserve opportunities to build relationships, find encouragement, gain perspective, and see what is possible when someone believes in them.

The Fearless Awards is that next bridge.

And sometimes, all it takes to cross that bridge is the courage to take the first step—and the hand of someone willing to walk beside you.
